Recent developments in Configurational-Bias Monte Carlo (CBMC) techniques allow the accurate calculation of the sorption isotherms for alkanes, and their mixtures, in various zeolites. The CBMC simulations give new insights into subtle entropy effects affecting mixture adsorption. Three types of entropy effects can be distinguished. (1) Size entropy effects favour the component with the smaller number of C atoms because the smaller molecule finds it easier to fill in the 'gaps' within the zeolite matrix at high molecular loadings. (2) Configurational entropy effects come into play for mixtures of alkanes that differ in the degree of branching. For a mixture of linear and branched alkanes with the same number of C atoms, configurational entropy effects favour the linear isomer because such molecules 'pack' more efficiently within, say, the intersecting channel topology of MFI zeolite. (3) Length entropy effects comes into force for sorption of linear and branched alkanes within the cylindrical channels of say AFI and MOR zeolites; here the double branched alkane has the shortest length and can be packed more efficiently within the channels. We demonstrate that CBMC simulations allow the efficient screening of zeolite structures for a given separation duty and aid the development of novel separation processes exploiting entropy effects.  相似文献

Adsorption isotherms and isosteric heat of adsorption of n-hexane in zeolite ITQ-29 were simulated using the Configurational Bias Monte Carlo (CBMC) technique in the grand-canonical (μ VT) ensemble and compared with experimental results published by Gribov et al. and obtained by IR spectroscopy where the fractional loadings of n-hexane in ITQ-29 are presented in units from integral intensities of the absorption bands [u.a.]. In this work we present the simulation loadings of n-hexane in ITQ-29 converted to fractional coverages and compared to the experimental results. The simulations were performed using a united atom force field. In addition, we calculated equilibrium adsorption isotherms of ethane and propane in ITQ-29 in excellent agreement with published experiments. This force field successfully reproduces adsorption properties of linear alkanes in cation-free LTA zeolite and is suitable for fast and accurate adsorption data predictions.  相似文献

Some potential adsorbents for ethylene/ethane separation are ethylene selective while the others are ethane selective. Among different adsorbents, i.e., zeolites and metal organic frameworks (MOFs), a comparative study is critical to find the more suitable adsorbent for the separation. In this paper, binary ethylene/ethane adsorption performances of zeolites and MOFs, i.e., equilibrium selectivities and adsorption capacities are investigated utilizing ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST). IAST model is applied at different gas compositions (0.1–0.9 ethylene mole fractions) and pressures up to 100 kPa. The results revealed that the most selective adsorbent toward ethylene is 5A zeolite while MOFs have higher equilibrium adsorption capacities. Among zeolites and MOFs, 5A and Fe2(dobdc) have the highest selectivity (27.4 and 13.6) and capacity (≈2.8 and 5.8 mmol ethylene/g) at 100 kPa and 298 K for a 50/50 mixture. Among ethane selective adsorbents, Silicalite-1 zeolite and UTSA-33a (MOF) have the highest selectivity and capacity (≈2.9 and ≈1.5 mmol ethane/g) at 100 kPa and 298 K for a 50/50 mixture, respectively. Investigation showed that adsorption capacity of ethylene selective adsorbents is higher than that of ethane selective ones.  相似文献

Zeolite NaX (commonly known as zeolite 13X) has found wide use in industry for the separation of carbon dioxide from air, methane-containing landfill gas, and flue gases. Capture and sequestration of carbon dioxide has become of utmost importance to mitigate severe environmental problems associated to burning of fossil fuels, such as the greenhouse effect and the consequential warming of global climate. Due to its low energy consumption and ease of operation, the zeolite-13X molecular-sieve pressure-swing adsorption process has become the method of choice for the recovery and capture of carbon dioxide from air and flue gas. Accurate correlation of the equilibrium adsorption isotherms of carbon dioxide in zeolite NaX is required for the reliable modeling and simulation of that process. In this paper, we firstly show that none of the traditional adsorption isotherm models (such as those of Langmuir, Sips, Toth, UNILAN, and Dubinin–Astakhov) is entirely capable of correlating a published set of equilibrium adsorption isotherms of carbon dioxide in zeolite NaX that were measured over a range of eight decades of pressure. A generalized statistical thermodynamic adsorption (GSTA) model, which we had already derived and successfully applied to the adsorption of water vapor in zeolite 3A, is employed in this work to obtain a very accurate correlation of that set of adsorption isotherms of carbon dioxide in zeolite NaX, for the pressure range from 0.2 Pa to 6.4 MPa and in the temperature range from −78 to 150 °C. We also provide thermochemical and structural interpretations of the isotherms fit and make predictions for the isosteric heat of adsorption that are in excellent agreement with the available experimental data.  相似文献

The surface area is one of the most important quantities for characterizing novel porous materials. The BET analysis is the standard method for determining surface areas from nitrogen adsorption isotherms and was originally derived for multilayer gas adsorption onto flat surfaces. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a relatively new class of crystalline, porous materials that have been shown to exhibit very large BET surface areas. These materials are microporous and possess surfaces that are far from flat. In some MOFs, adsorption occurs through a pore-filling mechanism rather than by layer formation. Thus, it is unclear whether BET surface area numbers reported for these materials are truly meaningful. Given the standard practice of reporting BET surface areas for novel porous materials, a critical test of the BET method is much needed. In this work, grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations were used to predict adsorption isotherms for nitrogen in a series of MOFs. The predicted isotherms were used as pseudoexperimental data to test the applicability of the BET theory for obtaining surface areas of microporous MOFs. BET surface areas calculated from the simulated isotherms agree very well with the accessible surface areas calculated directly from the crystal structures in a geometric fashion. In addition, the surface areas agree well with experimental reports in the literature. These results provide a strong validation that the BET theory can be used to obtain surface areas of MOFs.  相似文献

In this study we attempt to investigate the potential use of two zeolite template carbon (ZTC), EMT-ZTC and FAU-ZTC, to capture CO(2) at room temperature. We report their high pressure CO(2) adsorption isotherms (273 K) that show for FAU-ZTC the highest carbon capture capacity among published carbonaceous materials and competitive data with the best organic and inorganic adsorbing frameworks ever-known (zeolites and mesoporous silicas, COFs and MOFs). The importance of these results is discussed in light of mitigation of CO(2) emissions. In addition to these new experimental CO(2) adsorption data, we also present new insight into the adsorption process of the two structures by Monte Carlo simulations: we propose that two separate effects are responsible for the apparent similarity of the adsorption behaviour of the two structures: (i) pore blocking occurring on EMT-ZTC, and (ii) the change of the carbon polarizability due to the extreme curvature of FAU-ZTC.  相似文献

A?conceptual adsorption process for the recovery and purification of biobutanol is proposed. Different porous materials are tested on their ability to perform the adsorptive separations relevant to the process. The metal-organic framework ZIF-8, silicalite zeolite and active carbon were compared with respect to their adsorption capacity of 1-butanol dissolved in water, as obtained in static and dynamic conditions by respectively batch and breakthrough measurements at room temperature. Batch experimentation showed that other compounds present in a real ABE fermentation have no significant effect on the adsorption of 1-butanol on ZIF-8. The breakthrough separation of 1-butanol from an aqueous ABE mixture was performed with a ZIF-8 packed column. The desorption of 1-butanol from a saturated ZIF-8 packed column by a stepwise increase of the temperature to 423?K in combination with a purge of a nitrogen gas (60?ml/min) shows that 1-butanol desorbs at low temperature from ZIF-8. Adsorption isotherms of ethanol, 1-butanol and water in liquid phase on the zeolite SAPO-34 were determined by batch adsorption at 298?K. Also the separation of an ethanol/1-butanol mixture and the removal of ethanol from 1-butanol could be achieved with a SAPO-34 packed column. From this experimental work, two materials—ZIF-8 and SAPO-34—thus emerged as suitable adsorbents for the recovery and purification of biobutanol by adsorption.  相似文献

We present the results of Monte Carlo simulations of the adsorption of single-component ethane and ethylene and of equimolar mixtures of these two gases on bundles of closed, single-walled carbon nanotubes. Two types of nanotube bundles were used in the simulations: homogeneous (i.e., those in which all the nanotubes have identical diameters) and heterogeneous (those in which nanotubes of different diameters are allowed). We found that at the same pressure and temperature more ethane than ethylene adsorbs on the bundles over the entire range of pressures and temperatures explored. The simulation results for the equimolar mixtures show that the pressure at which maximum separation is attained is a very sensitive function of the diameter of the nanotubes present in the bundles. Simulations using heterogeneous bundles yield better agreement with single-component experimental data for isotherms and isosteric heats than those obtained from simulations using homogeneous bundles. Possible applications of nanotubes in gas separation are discussed. We explored the effect of the diameter of the nanotubes on the separation ability of these sorbents, both for the internal and for the external sites. We found that substrate selectivity is a decreasing function of temperature.  相似文献

We combine here a regularization procedure with individual adsorption isotherms obtained from grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations in order to obtain reliable pore size distributions. The methodology is applied to two hexagonal high-ordered silica materials: SBA-15 and PHTS, synthesized in our laboratory. Feasible pore size distributions are calculated through an adaptable procedure of deconvolution over the adsorption integral equation, with two necessary inputs: the experimental adsorption data and individual adsorption isotherms, assuming the validity of the independent pore model. The application of the deconvolution procedure implies an adequate grid size evaluation (i.e., numbers of pores and relative pressures to be considered for the inversion, or kernel size), the fulfillment of the discret Picard condition, and the appropriate choice of the regularization parameter (L-curve criteria). Assuming cylindrical geometry for both porous materials, the same set of individual adsorption isotherms generated from molecular simulations can be used to construct the kernel to obtain the PSD of SBA-15 and PHTS. The PSD robustness is measured imposing random errors over the experimental data. Excellent agreement is found between the calculated and the experimental global adsorption isotherms for both materials. Molecular simulations provide new insights into the studied systems, pointing out the need of high-resolution isotherms to describe the presence of complementary microporosity in these materials.  相似文献

Following removal of coordinated CH3CN, the resulting complexes [AgI(2,2′‐bipyridine)][BF4] ( 1 ) and [AgI(6,6′‐dimethyl‐2,2′‐bipyridine)][OTf] ( 2 ) show ethene/ethane sorption selectivities of 390 and 340, respectively, and corresponding ethene sorption capacities of 2.38 and 2.18 mmol g?1 when tested at an applied gas pressure of 90 kPa and a temperature of (20±1) °C. These ethene/ethane selectivities are 13 times higher than those reported for known solid sorbents for ethene/ethane separation. For 2 , ethene sorption reached 90 % of equilibrium capacity within 15 minutes, and this equilibrium capacity was maintained over the three sorption/desorption cycles tested. The rates of ethene sorption were also measured. To our knowledge, these are the first complexes, designed for olefin/paraffin separations, which have open silver(I) sites. The high selectivities arise from these open silver(I) sites and the relatively low molecular surface areas of the complexes.  相似文献

Using molecular simulation, four types of nanoporous carbons are examined as adsorbents for the separation of CO(2)/CH(4) mixtures at ambient temperature and pressures up to 10 MPa. First, the adsorption selectivity of CO(2) is investigated in carbon slit pores and single-walled carbon nanotube bundles in order to find the optimal pore dimensions for CO(2) separation. Then, the adsorptive properties of the optimized slit pore and nanotube bundle are compared with two realistic nanoporous carbon models: a carbon replica of zeolite Y and an amorphous carbon. For the four carbon models, adsorption isotherms and isosteric heats of adsorption are presented for both pure components and mixtures. Special attention is given to the calculation of excess isotherms and isosteric heats, which are necessary to assess the performance of model nanoporous materials in the context of experimental measurements. From these results, we discuss the impact that variables such as pore size, pore morphology, pressure and mixture composition have on the performance of nanoporous carbons for CO(2) separation.

Separation of olefin/paraffin is an energy-intensive and difficult separation process in petrochemical industry. Energy-efficient adsorption process is considered as a promising alternative to the traditional cryogenic distillation for separating olefin/paraffin mixtures. In this work, we explored the feasibility of adsorptive separation of olefin/paraffin mixtures using a magnesium-based metal-organic framework, Mg-MOF-74. Adsorption equilibria and kinetics of ethane, ethylene, propane, and propylene on a Mg-MOF-74 adsorbent were determined at 278, 298, and 318 K and pressures up to 100 kPa. A dual-site Sips model was used to correlate the adsorption equilibrium data, and a micropore diffusion model was applied to extract the diffusivities from the adsorption kinetics data. A grand canonical Monte Carlo simulation was conducted to calculate the adsorption isotherms and to elucidate the adsorption mechanisms. The simulation results showed that all four adsorbate molecules are preferentially adsorbed on the open metal sites where each metal site binds one adsorbate molecule. Propylene and propane have a stronger affinity to the Mg-MOF-74 adsorbent than ethane and ethylene because of their significant dipole moments. Adsorption equilibrium selectivity, combined equilibrium and kinetic selectivity, and adsorbent selection parameter for pressure swing adsorption processes were estimated. The relatively high values of adsorption selectivity suggest that it is feasible to separate ethylene/ethane, propylene/propane, and propylene/ethylene pairs in a vacuum swing adsorption process using Mg-MOF-74 as an adsorbent.  相似文献

Gas separation efficiencies of three zeolite membranes (Faujasite, MFI, and Chabazite) have been examined using the method of molecular dynamics. Our investigation has allowed us to study the effects of pore size and structure, state conditions, and compositions on the permeation of two binary gas mixtures, O(2)N(2) and CO(2)N(2). We have found that for the mixture components with similar sizes and adsorption characteristics, such as O(2)N(2), small-pore zeolites are not suited for separations, and this result is explicable at the molecular level. For mixture components with differing adsorption behavior, such as CO(2)N(2), separation is mainly governed by adsorption and small-pore zeolites separate such gases quite efficiently. When selective adsorption takes place, we have found that, for species with low adsorption, the permeation rate is low, even if the diffusion rate is quite high. Our results further indicate that loading (adsorption) dominates the separation of gas mixtures in small-pore zeolites, such as MFI and Chabazite. For larger-pore zeolites such as Faujasite, diffusion rates do have some effect on gas mixture separation, although adsorption continues to be important. Finally, our simulations using existing intermolecular potential models have replicated all known experimental results for these systems. This shows that molecular simulations could serve as a useful screening tool to determine the suitability of a membrane for potential separation applications.  相似文献

Electrostatic interactions are a critical factor in the adsorption of quadrupolar species such as CO(2) and N(2) in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and other nanoporous materials. We show how a version of the semiempirical charge equilibration method suitable for periodic materials can be used to efficiently assign charges and allow molecular simulations for a large number of MOFs. This approach is illustrated by simulating CO(2) and N(2) adsorption in ~500 MOFs; this is the largest set of structures for which this information has been reported to date. For materials predicted by our calculations to have promising adsorption selectivities, we performed more detailed calculations in which accurate quantum chemistry methods were used to assign atomic point charges, and molecular simulations were used to assess molecular diffusivities and binary adsorption isotherms. Our results identify two MOFs, experimentally known to be stable upon solvent removal, that are predicted to show no diffusion limitations for adsorbed molecules and extremely high CO(2)/N(2) adsorption selectivities for CO(2) adsorption from dry air and from gas mixtures typical of dry flue gas.  相似文献

The adsorption isotherms of hydrogen on microporous zeolite ZSM‐5, at supercritical conditions, have been modeled using the monolayer lattice density functional theory (LDFT) models, where the simple cubic lattice, face‐centered cubic lattice, body‐centered cubic lattice and tetragonal lattice structures are assumed for the arrangements of the adsorption sites inside pores based on the size and shape of the zeolite. The results indicate that the monolayer LDFT models appear to be effective in describing hydrogen adsorption on zeolite ZSM‐5 at supercritical conditions, and the calculated adsorption isotherms agree well with the experimental isotherms measured previously. The layer density of adsorbed phase is presented versus the bulk density and temperature. It is found that the densities of adsorbed phase on adsorbent surface are much higher than the bulk density for temperature range under study. However, in the core region, the layer densities are close to the bulk density. The monolayer adsorption is suitable for hydrogen on ZSM‐5 zeolite. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Understanding the behaviour of short-chain hydrocarbons confined to porous solids informs the targeted extraction of natural resources from geological features, and underpins rational developments in separation, storage and catalytic conversion processes. Herein, we report the application of low-field (12.7 MHz) 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxation measurements to characterise ethane dynamics within mesoporous silica materials exhibiting mean pore diameters between 6 and 50 nm. Our measurements provide NMR-based adsorption isotherms within the range 25–50 bar and at ambient temperature, incorporating the ethane condensation point (40.7 bar at our experimental temperature of 23.6 °C). The quantitative nature of the acquired data is validated via a direct comparison of NMR-derived excess adsorption capacities with ex situ gravimetric ethane adsorption measurements, which are demonstrated to agree to within 0.2 mmol g−1 of the observed ethane capacity. NMR relaxation time distributions are further demonstrated as a means to decouple interparticle and mesopore dominated adsorption phenomena, with unexpectedly rapid relaxation rates associated with interparticle ethane gas confirmed via a direct comparison with NMR self-diffusion analysis.  相似文献

Metal–organic frameworks (MOF) materials are promising materials for gas separation, but their application still faces various challenges. A strategy is now reported for introducing subunits of MOFs into traditional zeolite frameworks to obtain applicable adsorbents with advantages of both zeolites and MOFs. The subunits of ZIFs were introduced into zeolite Y and zeolite ZSM‐5 for CH4/N2 separation. Both the molecular simulation and experimental results validated that the IAST CH4/N2 selectivity of the resulting samples greatly improved (above 8, at 100 kPa and 25 °C) with the incorporation of ZIF subunits into zeolites structure, and the selectivities were obviously higher than that of zeolites and even better than that of ZIFs. This strategy not only gave rise to an efficient adsorbent for CH4/N2 separation but also provided ideas for design of other adsorption and separation materials.  相似文献
