Suppose is a maximal ideal of a commutative integral domain and that some power of is finitely generated. We show that is finitely generated in each of the following cases: (i) is of height one, (ii) is integrally closed and , (iii) is a monoid domain over a field , where is a cancellative torsion-free monoid such that , and is the maximal ideal . We extend the above results to ideals of a reduced ring such that is Noetherian. We prove that a reduced ring is Noetherian if each prime ideal of has a power that is finitely generated. For each with , we establish existence of a -dimensional integral domain having a nonfinitely generated maximal ideal of height such that is -generated.

Let be a TAF-algebra, the centre of the ideal lattice of , and the space of meet-irreducible elements of , equipped with the hull-kernel topology. It is shown that is a compact, locally compact, second countable, -space, that is an algebraic lattice isomorphic to the lattice of open subsets of , and that is isomorphic to the algebra of continuous, complex functions on . If is semisimple, then is isomorphic to the algebra of continuous, complex functions on , the primitive ideal space of . If is strongly maximal, then the sum of two closed ideals of is closed.

Let be the Lie superalgebra . We show that there is a surjective homomorphism from to the Weyl algebra , and we use this to construct an analog of the Joseph ideal. We also obtain a decomposition of the adjoint representation of on and use this to show that if is made into a Lie superalgebra using its natural -grading, then . In addition, we show that if and are isomorphic as Lie superalgebras, then . This answers a question of S. Montgomery.

We establish the following result.

Theorem. Let be a integrable bounded group representation whose Arveson spectrum is scattered. Then the subspace generated by all eigenvectors of the dual representation is dense in Moreover, the closed subalgebra generated by the operators () is semisimple.

If, in addition, does not contain any copy of then the subspace spanned by all eigenvectors of is dense in Hence, the representation is almost periodic whenever it is strongly continuous.

Let be a monomial ideal of . Bayer-Peeva-Sturmfels studied a subcomplex of the Taylor resolution, defined by a simplicial complex . They proved that if is generic (i.e., no variable appears with the same non-zero exponent in two distinct monomials which are minimal generators), then is the minimal free resolution of , where is the Scarf complex of . In this paper, we prove the following: for a generic (in the above sense) monomial ideal and each integer , there is an embedded prime of . Thus a generic monomial ideal with no embedded primes is Cohen-Macaulay (in this case, is shellable). We also study a non-generic monomial ideal whose minimal free resolution is for some . In particular, we prove that if all associated primes of have the same height, then is Cohen-Macaulay and is pure and strongly connected.

Rules and reals     
A ``-rule" is a sequence of pairwise disjoint sets , each of cardinality and subsets . A subset (a ``real') follows a rule if for infinitely many , .

An application of is in Section 3: we show that below one can find proper extensions of dense independent families which preserve a pre-assigned group of automorphisms. The original motivation for discovering rules was an attempt to construct a maximal homogeneous family over . The consistency of such a family is still open.

We shall use a -algebra approach to study operators of the form where is subnormal and is normal. We shall determine the spectral properties for these operators, and find the minimal normal extension and the dual operator. We also give a necessary condition for to contain a compact operator and a sufficient condition for the algebraic equivalence of and .

We also consider the existence of a homomorphism satisfying . We shall characterize the operators such that exists for every operator .

The problem of when is unitarily equivalent to is considered. Complete results are given when and are positive operators with finite multiplicity functions and has compact self-commutator. Some examples are also given.
