In this paper we present three Ramsey‐type results, which we derive from a simple and yet powerful lemma, proved using probabilistic arguments. Let 3 ≤ r < s be fixed integers and let G be a graph on n vertices not containing a complete graph Ks on s vertices. More than 40 years ago Erd?s and Rogers posed the problem of estimating the maximum size of a subset of G without a copy of the complete graph Kr. Our first result provides a new lower bound for this problem, which improves previous results of various researchers. It also allows us to solve some special cases of a closely related question posed by Erd?s. For two graphs G and H, the Ramsey number R(G, H) is the minimum integer N such that any red‐blue coloring of the edges of the complete graph KN, contains either a red copy of G or a blue copy of H. The book with n pages is the graph Bn consisting of n triangles sharing one edge. Here we study the book‐complete graph Ramsey numbers and show that R(Bn, Kn) ≤ O(n3/log3/2n), improving the bound of Li and Rousseau. Finally, motivated by a question of Erd?s, Hajnal, Simonovits, Sós, and Szemerédi, we obtain for all 0 < δ < 2/3 an estimate on the number of edges in a K4‐free graph of order n which has no independent set of size n1‐δ. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. For x and y vertices of a connected graph G, let TG(x, y) denote the expected time before a random walk starting from x reaches y. We determine, for each n > 0, the n-vertex graph G and vertices x and y for which TG(x, y) is maximized. the extremal graph consists of a clique on ?(2n + 1)/3?) (or ?)(2n ? 2)/3?) vertices, including x, to which a path on the remaining vertices, ending in y, has been attached; the expected time TG(x, y) to reach y from x in this graph is approximately 4n3/27.  相似文献

Given two graphsH andG, letH(G) denote the number of subgraphs ofG isomorphic toH. We prove that ifH is a bipartite graph with a one-factor, then for every triangle-free graphG withn verticesH(G) H(T 2(n)), whereT 2(n) denotes the complete bipartite graph ofn vertices whose colour classes are as equal as possible. We also prove that ifK is a completet-partite graph ofm vertices,r > t, n max(m, r – 1), then there exists a complete (r – 1)-partite graphG* withn vertices such thatK(G) K(G*) holds for everyK r -free graphG withn vertices. In particular, in the class of allK r -free graphs withn vertices the complete balanced (r – 1)-partite graphT r–1(n) has the largest number of subgraphs isomorphic toK t (t < r),C 4,K 2,3. These generalize some theorems of Turán, Erdös and Sauer.Dedicated to Paul Turán on his 80th Birthday  相似文献

Let K be a field of characteristic zero. For a torsion-free finitely generated nilpotent group G, we naturally associate four finite dimensional nilpotent Lie algebras over K, ? K (G), grad(?)(? K (G)), grad(g)(exp ? K (G)), and L K (G). Let 𝔗 c be a torsion-free variety of nilpotent groups of class at most c. For a positive integer n, with n ≥ 2, let F n (𝔗 c ) be the relatively free group of rank n in 𝔗 c . We prove that ? K (F n (𝔗 c )) is relatively free in some variety of nilpotent Lie algebras, and ? K (F n (𝔗 c )) ? L K (F n (𝔗 c )) ? grad(?)(? K (F n (𝔗 c ))) ? grad(g)(exp ? K (F n (𝔗 c ))) as Lie algebras in a natural way. Furthermore, F n (𝔗 c ) is a Magnus nilpotent group. Let G 1 and G 2 be torsion-free finitely generated nilpotent groups which are quasi-isometric. We prove that if G 1 and G 2 are relatively free of finite rank, then they are isomorphic. Let L be a relatively free nilpotent Lie algebra over ? of finite rank freely generated by a set X. Give on L the structure of a group R, say, by means of the Baker–Campbell–Hausdorff formula, and let H be the subgroup of R generated by the set X. We show that H is relatively free in some variety of nilpotent groups; freely generated by the set X, H is Magnus and L ? ??(H) ? L ?(H) as Lie algebras. For relatively free residually torsion-free nilpotent groups, we prove that ? K and L K are isomorphic as Lie algebras. We also give an example of a finitely generated Magnus nilpotent group G, not relatively free, such that ??(G) is not isomorphic to L ?(G) as Lie algebras.  相似文献

Let r(k) denote the least integer n-such that for any graph G on n vertices either G or its complement G contains a complete graph Kk on k vertices. in this paper, we prove the following lower bound for the Ramsey number r(k) by explicit construction: r(k) ≥ exp (c(Log k)4/3[(log log k)1/3] for some constant c> 0.  相似文献

We investigate the problem that at least how many edges must a maximal triangle-free graph on n vertices have if the maximal valency is ≤D. Denote this minimum value by F(n, D). For large enough n, we determine the exact value of F(n, D) if D ≥ (n ? 2)/2 and we prove that lim F(n, cn)/n = K(c) exists for all 0 < c with the possible exception of a sequence ck → 0. The determination of K(c) is a finite problem on all intervals [γ, ∞). For D = cn?, 1/2 < ? < 1, we give upper and lower bounds for F(n, D) differing only in a constant factor. (Clearly, D < (n - 1)1/2 is impossible in a maximal triangle-free graph.)  相似文献

In this note we strengthen the stability theorem of Erd?s and Simonovits. Write Kr(s1, …, sr) for the complete r‐partite graph with classes of sizes s1, …, sr and Tr(n) for the r‐partite Turán graph of order n. Our main result is: For all r≥2 and all sufficiently small c>0, ε>0, every graph G of sufficiently large order n with e(G)>(1?1/r?ε)n2/2 satisfies one of the conditions:

A conjecture of Komlós states that for every graph H, there is a constant K such that if G is any n‐vertex graph of minimum degree at least (1 ? (1/χcr(H)))n, where χcr(H) denotes the critical chromatic number of H, then G contains an H‐matching that covers all but at most K vertices of G. In this paper we prove that the conjecture holds for all sufficiently large values of n. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Random Struct. Alg., 23: 180–205, 2003  相似文献

We represent a graph by assigning each vertex a finite set such that vertices are adjacent if and only if the corresponding sets have at least two common elements. The 2-intersection number θ2(G) of a graph G is the minimum size of the union of sets in such a representation. We prove that the maximum order of a path that can be represented in this way using t elements is between (t2 - 19t + 4)/4 and (t2 - t + 6)/4, making θ2(Pn) asymptotic to 2√n. We also show the existence of a constant c depending on ? such that, for any tree T with maximum degree at most d, θ2(T) ≤ c(√n)1+?. When the maximum degree is not bounded, there is an n-vertex tree T with θ2(T) > .945n2/3. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

For an arbitrary tree T of order m and an arbitrary positive integer n, Chvátal proved that the Ramsey number r(T, Kn) = 1 + (m ? 1) (n ? 1). for graphs G, G1, and G2, we say that G arrows G1 and G2, written G → (G1, G2), if for every factorization G = RB, either G1 is a subgraph of R or G2 is a subgraph of B. it is shown that (i) for each l ≥ 2, K1+ (m?1)(n?1) ?E(K1) → (T, Kn) for m ≥ 2/ ? 1 and n ≥ 2; (ii) K1 +,(m ?1)(n ?1) ? E(H) → (T, Kn), where H is any tree of order m ? 1, m ≥ 3 and n ≥ 2. It is further shown that result (i) is sharp with respect to the inequality m2/? 1; in particular, examples are given to show that K1 + (2l?3)(n?1) E(K1) ? (P21?2, Kn) for all n ≥ 2, where P21?2 denotes the path of order 21 ? 2. Also result (ii) is sharp with respect to the order of H; examples aregiven to show that K1 + (m?1)(n?1)? E(K(1, m ? 1)) ?(T, Kn)for any tree T of order m and any n ≥ 2.  相似文献

Let ??(n, m) denote the class of simple graphs on n vertices and m edges and let G ∈ ?? (n, m). There are many results in graph theory giving conditions under which G contains certain types of subgraphs, such as cycles of given lengths, complete graphs, etc. For example, Turan's theorem gives a sufficient condition for G to contain a Kk + 1 in terms of the number of edges in G. In this paper we prove that, for m = αn2, α > (k - 1)/2k, G contains a Kk + 1, each vertex of which has degree at least f(α)n and determine the best possible f(α). For m = ?n2/4? + 1 we establish that G contains cycles whose vertices have certain minimum degrees. Further, for m = αn2, α > 0 we establish that G contains a subgraph H with δ(H) ≥ f(α, n) and determine the best possible value of f(α, n).  相似文献

The Ramsey number r(H, K n ) is the smallest positive integer N such that every graph of order N contains either a copy of H or an independent set of size n. The Turán number ex(m, H) is the maximum number of edges in a graph of order m not containing a copy of H. We prove the following two results: (1) Let H be a graph obtained from a tree F of order t by adding a new vertex w and joining w to each vertex of F by a path of length k such that any two of these paths share only w. Then r(H,Kn) £ ck,t [(n1+1/k)/(ln1/k n)]{r(H,K_n)\leq c_{k,t}\, {n^{1+1/k}\over \ln^{1/k} n}} , where c k,t is a constant depending only on k and t. This generalizes some results in Li and Rousseau (J Graph Theory 23:413–420, 1996), Li and Zang (J Combin Optim 7:353–359, 2003), and Sudakov (Electron J Combin 9, N1, 4 pp, 2002). (2) Let H be a bipartite graph with ex(m, H) = O(m γ ), where 1 < γ < 2. Then r(H,Kn) £ cH ([(n)/(lnn)])1/(2-g){r(H,K_n)\leq c_H ({n\over \ln n})^{1/(2-\gamma)}}, where c H is a constant depending only on H. This generalizes a result in Caro et al. (Discrete Math 220:51–56, 2000).  相似文献

We write HG if every 2‐coloring of the edges of graph H contains a monochromatic copy of graph G. A graph H is Gminimal if HG, but for every proper subgraph H′ of H, H′ ? G. We define s(G) to be the minimum s such that there exists a G‐minimal graph with a vertex of degree s. We prove that s(Kk) = (k ? 1)2 and s(Ka,b) = 2 min(a,b) ? 1. For a fixed integer n ? ω, a graph G of chromatic number greater than n is called persistent if for all n + 1-chromatic graphs H, the products G × H are n + 1-chromatic graphs. Wheter all graphs of chromatic number greater than n are persistent is a long-standing open problem due to Hedetniemi. We call a graph G strongly persistent if G is persistent and the Hajos sum of G with any other persistent graph H is still persistent. This paper extends the class of known persistent graphs by proving the following results: If G is constructed from copies of Kn+1 by Hajos sums, adding vertices and edges and at most one contraction of nonadjacent vertices, then G is strongly persistent. © 1929 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

The Ramsey number r(H) of a graph H is the minimum positive integer N such that every two-coloring of the edges of the complete graph KN on N vertices contains a monochromatic copy of H. A graph H is d-degenerate if every subgraph of H has minimum degree at most d. Burr and Erdős in 1975 conjectured that for each positive integer d there is a constant cd such that r(H)≤cdn for every d-degenerate graph H on n vertices. We show that for such graphs , improving on an earlier bound of Kostochka and Sudakov. We also study Ramsey numbers of random graphs, showing that for d fixed, almost surely the random graph G(n,d/n) has Ramsey number linear in n. For random bipartite graphs, our proof gives nearly tight bounds.  相似文献

For 1 ≤ dk, let Kk/d be the graph with vertices 0, 1, …, k ? 1, in which ij if d ≤ |i ? j| ≤ k ? d. The circular chromatic number χc(G) of a graph G is the minimum of those k/d for which G admits a homomorphism to Kk/d. The circular clique number ωc(G) of G is the maximum of those k/d for which Kk/d admits a homomorphism to G. A graph G is circular perfect if for every induced subgraph H of G, we have χc(H) = ωc(H). In this paper, we prove that if G is circular perfect then for every vertex x of G, NG[x] is a perfect graph. Conversely, we prove that if for every vertex x of G, NG[x] is a perfect graph and G ? N[x] is a bipartite graph with no induced P5 (the path with five vertices), then G is a circular perfect graph. In a companion paper, we apply the main result of this paper to prove an analog of Haj?os theorem for circular chromatic number for k/d ≥ 3. Namely, we shall design a few graph operations and prove that for any k/d ≥ 3, starting from the graph Kk/d, one can construct all graphs of circular chromatic number at least k/d by repeatedly applying these graph operations. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Let G be a graph of order n. We show that if G is a 2-connected graph and max{d(u), d(v)} + |N(u) U N(v)| ≥ n for each pair of vertices u, v at distance two, then either G is hamiltonian or G ?3Kn/3 U T1 U T2, where n ? O (mod 3), and T1 and T2 are the edge sets of two vertex disjoint triangles containing exactly one vertex from each Kn/3. This result generalizes both Fan's and Lindquester's results as well as several others.  相似文献

For a graph G, let a(G) denote the maximum size of a subset of vertices that induces a forest. Suppose that G is connected with n vertices, e edges, and maximum degree Δ. Our results include: (a) if Δ ≤ 3, and GK4, then a(G) ≥ n ? e/4 ? 1/4 and this is sharp for all permissible e ≡ 3 (mod 4); and (b) if Δ ≥ 3, then a(G) ≥ α(G) + (n ? α(G))/(Δ ? 1)2. A graph is called a proper refinement of a star graph if it is a refinement of a star graph, but it is neither a star graph nor a complete graph. For a refinement of a star graph G with center c, let G c * be the subgraph of G induced on the vertex set V (G)\ {c or end vertices adjacent to c}. In this paper, we study the isomorphic classification of some finite commutative local rings R by investigating their zero-divisor graphs G = Γ(R), which is a proper refinement of a star graph with exactly one center c. We determine all finite commutative local rings R such that G c * has at least two connected components. We prove that the diameter of the induced graph G c * is two if Z(R)2 ≠ {0}, Z(R)3 = {0} and G c * is connected. We determine the structure of R which has two distinct nonadjacent vertices α, βZ(R)* \ {c} such that the ideal [N(α) ∩ N(β)]∪ {0} is generated by only one element of Z(R)*\{c}. We also completely determine the correspondence between commutative rings and finite complete graphs K n with some end vertices adjacent to a single vertex of K n .  相似文献

The noncommuting graph ?(G) of a nonabelian finite group G is defined as follows: The vertices of ?(G) are represented by the noncentral elements of G, and two distinct vertices x and y are joined by an edge if xyyx. In [1], the following was conjectured: Let G and H be two nonabelian finite groups such that ?(G) ? ?(H); then ¦G¦ = ¦H¦. Here we give some counterexamples to this conjecture.  相似文献
