Anion photoelectron spectroscopy of C3H- and C3D- is performed using both field-free time-of-flight and slow electron velocity-map imaging. We observe and assign transitions originating from linear/bent (l-C3H) and cyclic (c-C3H) anionic isomers to the corresponding neutral ground states and low-lying excited states. Transitions within the cyclic and linear manifolds are distinguished by their photoelectron angular distributions and their intensity dependence on the neutral precursor. Using calculated values for the energetics of the neutral isomers [Ochsenfeld et al., J. Chem. Phys. 106, 4141 (1997)], which predict c-C3H to lie 74 meV lower than l-C3H, the experimental results establish c-C3H- as the anionic ground state and place it 229 meV below l-C3H-. Electron affinities of 1.999+/-0.003 and 1.997+/-0.005 eV are determined for C3H and C3D from the X 2B2<--X 1A1 photodetachment transition of c-C3H. Term energies for several low-lying states of c-C3H and l-C3H are also determined. Franck-Condon simulations are used to make vibrational assignments for the bands involving c-C3H. Simulations of the l-C3H bands were more complicated owing to large amplitude bending motion and, in the case of the neutral A 2Pi state, strong Renner-Teller coupling.  相似文献

The excited state decay of the hydrocarbon radicals ethyl, C(2)H(5); propargyl, C(3)H(3); and benzyl, C(7)H(7) was investigated by femtosecond time-resolved photoionization. Radicals were generated by flash pyrolysis of n-propyl nitrite, propargyl bromide, and toluene, respectively. It is shown that the 2 (2)A(') (3s) Rydberg state of ethyl excited at 250 nm decays with a time constant of 20 fs. No residual signal was observed at longer delay times. For the 3 (2)B(1) state of propargyl excited at 255 nm a slower decay with a time constant 50+/-10 fs was determined. The 4 (2)B(2) state of benzyl excited at 255 nm decays within 150+/-30 fs.  相似文献

By exciting cyclohexene in the gas phase at 200 nm and probing it by nonresonant multiphoton ionization with mass-selective detection of the ion yields, we found four time constants tau(i) (20, 47, 43, 350 fs). Whereas deuteration lengthens tau2 by a factor of 1.4, the other constants do not change. Tau1-tau3 represent traveling times through observation windows on excited surfaces, whereas tau4 reflects a process in the hot ground state. We assign tau1 (20 fs) to departure from the Franck-Condon regions of the Rydberg and pipi* states, which are both populated at 200 nm, and tau2 (47 fs) to traveling along the pipi* surface and suggest that a [1,3]-sigmatropic H shift begins in this state. This rationalizes the deuterium effect on tau2. To explain why this window is followed by a process not subject to a D effect, we postulate that the pipi surface is crossed late (i.e., at low energy) by the zwitterionic state Z and that formation of a carbene (the known photochemical product, cyclopentylcarbene) begins there. The corresponding 1,2-shift of a CC bond is then (within tau4 = 350 fs) largely reversed on the ground-state surface, while a smaller part of the carbene forms products such as methylenecyclopentane within the same time. Carbene formation is probably accompanied by some cis-trans isomerization. The wavelength dependence of carbene formation is attributed to a memory for the initially excited state, based on momentum conservation. The processes are most likely typical of simple olefins. The fragmentation pattern showed that butadiene is not formed until at least 500 ps. The retro-Diels-Alder reaction, known to take place in the ground state, thus only occurs later.  相似文献

The photochemistry of Diazo Meldrum's acid (DM) was investigated by fs time-resolved UV-vis and IR spectroscopic methods. UV (266 nm) excitation of DM pumps the molecule to the S 5 and S 7 excited states. After fast internal conversion (IC), the S 2 state is formed, which will undergo Wolff rearrangement to form vibrationally excited ketene, which relaxes in 9 ps. The S 2 state will also relax to the S 1 state, which isomerizes to diazirine, fragments to form carbene, and relaxes further to the ground state of DM. The singlet carbene absorbs at 305 nm, is formed within 300 fs of the laser pulse, and has a lifetime of 2.3 ps in acetonitrile. The lifetime of DM in the S 2 and S 1 states is less than 300 fs. The quantum efficiency of DM decomposition is approximately 50% in chloroform with 266 nm excitation.  相似文献

Understanding the primary photophysical processes in molecules is essential for interpreting their photochemistry, because molecules rarely react from the initially excited electronic state. In this study the ultrafast excited-state dynamics of chlorophenylcarbene (CPC) and trifluoromethylphenylcarbene (TFPC), two species that are considered as models for carbene dynamics, were investigated by femtosecond time-resolved pump probe spectroscopy in the gas phase. Their dynamics was followed in real time by time-resolved photoionization and photoelectron imaging. CPC was excited at 265 nm into the 3 1A' state, corresponding to excitation from a pi-orbital of the aromatic ring into the LUMO. The LUMO contains a contribution of the p-orbital at the carbene center. Three time constants are apparent in the photoelectron images: A fast decay process with tau1 approximately 40 fs, a second time constant of tau2 approximatley 350 fs, and an additional time constant of tau3 approximately 1 ps. The third time constant is only visible in the time-dependence of low kinetic energy electrons. Due to the dense manifold of excited states between 3.9 and 5 eV, known from ab initio calculations, the recorded time-resolved electron images show broad and unstructured bands. A clear population transfer between the states thus can not directly be observed. The fast deactivation process is linked to either a population transfer between the strongly coupled excited states between 3.9 and 5.0 eV or the movement of the produced wave packet out of the Franck-Condon region. Since the third long time constant is only visible for photoelectrons at low kinetic energy, evidence is given that this time constant corresponds to the lifetime of the lowest excited A 1A' state. The remaining time constant reflects a deactivation of the manifold of states in the range 3.9-5.0 eV down to the A 1A' state.  相似文献

The fifth harmonic (162 nm, 11 fs), generated in a short argon cell from 12 fs Ti-sapphire laser pulses, was used to excite C2H4 and C2D4 in the maximum of the first pi pi* transition. Around 10% of the molecules were excited to the pi3s Rydberg state instead. The subsequent motion of the wave packet, moving over the potentials from the Franck-Condon region down to the ground state, was monitored by nonresonant ionization at 810 nm with mass-selective detection of the ion yield. Five time constants (from approximately 20 fs in excited states to 0.6-11 ps in the hot ground state) and four coherent oscillations (CC stretch and torsion vibrations or hindered free rotation) were determined for each isotopomer. The initial relaxation follows a superposition of CC twist and stretch coordinates; this explains a surprisingly small deuterium isotope effect of the initial time constant (21 versus 24 fs). Also the vibrations in the Franck-Condon region have such a mixed character and a correspondingly small isotope shift. From the perpendicular minimum the wave packet reaches (within 17 or 21 fs for the two isotopomers) a conical intersection via a direction that also involves partial hydrogen migration. This is concluded from the detection of ethylidene (CH3CH), formed simultaneously with ground-state ethylene. This carbene isomerizes in the ground state within 0.6 ps (1.6 ps for CD3CD) to ethylene. Two time constants for dissociation (4.5 and 11 ps) in the hot ground state were also identified. The small yields of bimolecular reactions (photodimerization, addition reactions involving a "suddenly polarized" excited state, carbene reactions) are interpreted in terms of the short lifetimes. It is pointed out that the relaxation path starting from the Rydberg state merges into that from the pi pi* state; nevertheless, there is a wavelength dependence in the photochemistry of olefins, because due to a momentum effect the wave packet remembers from which state it came.  相似文献

Ultrafast laser flash photolysis (310 nm) of methyl 2-napthyldiazoacetate (2-NpCN2CO2CH3) in acetonitrile or cyclohexane produces a diazo excited state which absorbs broadly in the visible region (tau = 300 fs). The decay of the excited diazo compound is accompanied by growth of the vibrationally excited singlet 2-naphthyl(carbomethoxy)carbene ((1)NpCCO2CH3). The singlet carbene absorbs at 360 and 470 nm. In acetonitrile these bands do not decay over 3 ns, but they do decay by approximately 50% of their original intensity in cyclohexane in 3 ns. It is concluded that (1)NpCCO2CH3 has a singlet ground state in acetonitrile but a triplet ground state in cyclohexane. Related experiments reveal a singlet ground state in Freon-113 and chloroform. This interpretation is supported by ultrafast IR spectroscopy, which confirms that only (1)NpCCO2CH3 is formed within 50 ps of the laser pulse rather than a singlet-triplet equilibrium mixture of carbene. The planar singlet relaxes to the preferred perpendicular singlet over a few tens of picoseconds, as evidenced by a red shift of the carbonyl stretching vibration. Although our data agrees with previous studies, its interpretation is somewhat altered.  相似文献

The formation and the decomposition of chemically activated cyclopentoxy radicals from the c-C5H9 + O reaction have been studied in the gas phase at room temperature. Two different experimental arrangements have been used. Arrangement A consisted of a laser-flash photolysis set up combined with quantitative Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and allowed the determination of the stable products at 4 mbar. The c-C5H9 radicals were produced via the reaction c-C5H10 + Cl with chlorine atoms from the photolysis of CFCl3; the O atoms were generated by photolysis of SO2. Arrangement B, a conventional discharge flow-reactor with molecular beam sampling, was used to determine the rate coefficient. Here, the hydrocarbon radicals (c-C5H9, C2H5, CH2OCH3) were produced via the reaction of atomic fluorine with c-C5H10, C2H6, and CH3OCH3, respectively, and detected by mass spectrometry after laser photoionization. For the c-C5H9 + O reaction, the relative contributions of intermediate formation (c-C5H9O) and direct abstraction (c-C5H8 + OH) were found to be 68 +/- 5 and 32 +/- 4%, respectively. The decomposition products of the chemically activated intermediate could be identified, and the following relative branching fractions were obtained: c-C5H8O + H (31 +/- 2%), CH2CH(CH2)2CHO + H (40 +/- 5%), 2 C2H4 + H + CO (17 +/- 5%), and C3H4O + C2H4 + H (12 +/- 5%). Additionally, the product formation of the c-C5H8 + O reaction was studied, and the following relative yields were obtained (mol %): C2H4, 24%; C3H4O, 18%; c-C5H8O, 30%; c-C5H8O, 23%; 4-pentenal, 5%. The rate coefficient of the c-C5H9 + O reaction was determined relative to the reactions C2H5 + O and CH3OCH2 + O leading to k = (1.73 +/- 0.05) x 10(14) cm3 mol(-1) s(-1). The experimental branching fractions are analyzed in terms of statistical rate theory with molecular and transition-state data from quantum chemical calculations, and high-pressure limiting Arrhenius parameters for the unimolecular decomposition reactions of C5H9O species are derived.  相似文献

A laser-induced fluorescence spectrum was observed in the 500-560 nm region when a mixture of 1,4-cyclohexadiene and oxalyl chloride was photolyzed at 193 nm. The observed excitation spectrum was assigned to the A (2)A(2)<--X (2)B(1) transition of the cyclohexadienyl radical c-C6H7, produced by abstraction of a hydrogen atom from 1,4-cyclohexadiene by Cl atoms. The origin of the A<--X transition of c-C(6)H(7) was at 18 207 cm(-1). From measurements of the dispersed fluorescence spectra and ab initio calculations, the frequencies of several vibrational modes in both the ground and excited states of c-C(6)H(7) were determined: nu(5)(C-H in-plane bend)=1571, nu(8)(C-H in-plane bend)=1174, nu(10)(C-C-C in-plane bend)=981, nu(12)(C-C-C in-plane bend)=559, nu(16)(C-C-C out-of-plane bend)=375, and nu(33)(C-C-C in-plane bend)=600 cm(-1) for the ground state and nu(8)=1118, nu(10)=967, nu(12)=502, nu(16)=172, and nu(33)=536 cm(-1) for the excited states.  相似文献

Ab initio CCSD(T)/CBS//B3LYP/6-311G** calculations of the potential energy surface for possible dissociation channels of the phenyl radical are combined with microcanonical Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus calculations of reaction rate constants in order to predict statistical product branching ratios in photodissociation of c-C(6)H(5) at various wavelengths. The results indicate that at 248 nm the photodissociation process is dominated by the production of ortho-benzyne via direct elimination of a hydrogen atom from the phenyl radical. At 193 nm, the statistical branching ratios are computed to be 63.4%, 21.1%, and 14.4% for the o-C(6)H(4) + H, l-C(6)H(4) ((Z)-hexa-3-ene-1,5-diyne) + H, and n-C(4)H(3) + C(2)H(2) products, respectively, in a contradiction with recent experimental measurements, which showed C(4)H(3) + C(2)H(2) as the major product. Although two lower energy pathways to the i-C(4)H(3) + C(2)H(2) products are identified, they appeared to be kinetically unfavorable and the computed statistical branching ratio of i-C(4)H(3) + C(2)H(2) does not exceed 1%. To explain the disagreement with experiment, we optimized conical intersections between the ground and the first excited electronic states of C(6)H(5) and, based on their structures and energies, suggested the following photodissociation mechanism at 193 nm: c-C(6)H(5) 1 → absorption of a photon → electronically excited 1 → internal conversion to the lowest excited state → conversion to the ground electronic state via conical intersections at CI-2 or CI-3 → non-statistical decay of the vibrationally excited radical favoring the formation of the n-C(4)H(3) + C(2)H(2) products. This scenario can be attained if the intramolecular vibrational redistribution in the CI-2 or CI-3 structures in the ground electronic state is slower than their dissociation to n-C(4)H(3) + C(2)H(2) driven by the dynamical preference.  相似文献

The multiphoton multichannel photodynamics of NO(2) has been studied using femtosecond time-resolved coincidence imaging. A novel photoelectron-photoion coincidence imaging machine was developed at the laboratory in Amsterdam employing velocity map imaging and "slow" charged particle extraction using additional electron and ion optics. The NO(2) photodynamics was studied using a two color pump-probe scheme with femtosecond pulses at 400 and 266 nm. The multiphoton excitation produces both NO(2) (+) parent ions and NO(+) fragment ions. Here we mainly present the time dependent photoelectron images in coincidence with NO(2) (+) or NO(+) and the (NO(+),e) photoelectron versus fragment ion kinetic energy correlations. The coincidence photoelectron spectra and the correlated energy distributions make it possible to assign the different dissociation pathways involved. Nonadiabatic dynamics between the ground state and the A (2)B(2) state after absorption of a 400 nm photon is reflected in the transient photoelectron spectrum of the NO(2) (+) parent ion. Furthermore, Rydberg states are believed to be used as "stepping" states responsible for the rather narrow and well-separated photoelectron spectra in the NO(2) (+) parent ion. Slow statistical and fast direct fragmentation of NO(2) (+) after prompt photoelectron ejection is observed leading to formation of NO(+)+O. Fragmentation from both the ground state and the electronically excited a (3)B(2) and b (3)A(2) states of NO(2) (+) is observed. At short pump probe delay times, the dominant multiphoton pathway for NO(+) formation is a 3x400 nm+1x266 nm excitation. At long delay times (>500 fs) two multiphoton pathways are observed. The dominant pathway is a 1x400 nm+2x266 nm photon excitation giving rise to very slow electrons and ions. A second pathway is a 3x400 nm photon absorption to NO(2) Rydberg states followed by dissociation toward neutral electronically and vibrationally excited NO(A (2)Sigma,v=1) fragments, ionized by one 266 nm photon absorption. As is shown in the present study, even though the pump-probe transients are rather featureless the photoelectron-photoion coincidence images show a complex time varying dynamics in NO(2). We present the potential of our novel coincidence imaging machine to unravel in unprecedented detail the various competing pathways in femtosecond time-resolved multichannel multiphoton dynamics of molecules.

We present femtosecond time-resolved photoelectron spectra of adenine in a molecular beam, recorded at pump wavelengths of 250, 267, and 277 nm. This leads to initial excitation of the bright S2(pipi*). Close to the band origin (277 nm), the lifetime is several picoseconds. Higher vibronic levels (267 and 250 nm excitation) show much shorter lifetimes of t < 50 fs, and we observe strong coupling between S2(pipi*) and S1(npi*). Rapid internal conversion (t < 50 fs) populates the lower lying S1(npi*) state which has a lifetime of 750 fs. At 267 nm, we found evidence for an additional channel which is consistent with the dissociative S3(pisigma*) state, previously proposed as an ultrafast relaxation pathway from S2(pipi*).  相似文献

This study investigates the 234 nm photodissociation dynamics of cyclobutyl bromide using a two-dimensional photofragment velocity imaging technique. The spin-orbit ground- and excited-state Br(2P) atoms are state-selectively detected via [2+1] resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI), whereas the cyclobutyl radicals are ionized using 157 nm laser light. The Br(2P(3/2)) and the Br(2P(1/2)) atoms and their c-C4H7 radical cofragments evidence a single-peaked, Gaussian-shaped translational energy distribution ranging from approximately 14 to approximately 39 kcal/mol and angular distributions with significant parallel character. The Br(2P(1/2))/ Br(2P(3/2)) spin-orbit branching ratio is determined to be 0.11 +/- 0.07 by momentum match between the Br(2P) photofragments and the recoiling c-C4H7 fragments, assuming a uniform photoionization probability of the c-C4H7 radicals with an internal energy range of 10-35 kcal/mol. The REMPI line strength ratio for the detection of Br(2P(3/2)) and Br(2P(1/2)) atoms at 233.681 and 234.021 nm, respectively, is therefore derived to be 0.10 +/- 0.07. The measured recoil kinetic energies of the c-C4H7 radicals, and the resulting distribution of internal energies, indicates some of the radicals are formed with total internal energies above the barrier to isomerization and subsequent dissociation, but our analysis indicates they may be stable due to the substantial fraction of the internal energy which is partitioned to rotational energy of the radicals.  相似文献

The excited-state dynamics of the tert-butyl radical, t-C4H9, was investigated by femtosecond time-resolved photoionization and photoelectron spectroscopy. The experiments were supported by ab initio calculations. tert-Butyl radicals, generated by flash pyrolysis of azo-tert-butane, were excited into the A 2A1 (3s) state between 347 and 307 nm and the 3p band at 274 and 268 nm and ionized by 810-nm radiation, in a [1 + 2'] or [1 + 3'] process. Electronic structure calculations confirm that the two states are of s and p Rydberg characters, respectively. The carbon framework becomes planar and thus ion-like in both states. The photoelectron spectra are broad and seem to be mediated by accidental intermediate resonances in the probe step. All time-resolved photoelectron spectra can be described by a single decay time. For the A 2A1 state, lifetimes between 180 and 69 fs were measured. Surprisingly, a much longer lifetime of around 2 ps was found for the 3p state. To understand the decay dynamics, the potential energy was computed as a function of several important nuclear coordinates. A [1,2] H-atom shift to the isobutyl radical seems not to be important for the excited-state dynamics. Qualitative considerations indicate curve crossings between the ground state, the 3s state, and a valence state along the asymmetric C-C stretch coordinate that correlates to the dimethylcarbene + methyl product channel. The implications of the present study for earlier work on the nanosecond time scale are discussed.

Neutral superexcited states in molecular oxygen converging to the O(2)(+) c (4)Σ(u)(-) ion state are excited and probed with femtosecond time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy to investigate predissociation and autoionization relaxation channels as the superexcited states decay. The c (4)Σ(u)(-) 4sσ(g) v=0, c (4)Σ(u)(-) 4sσ(g) v=1, and c (4)Σ(u)(-) 3dσ(g) v=1 superexcited states are prepared with pulsed high-harmonic radiation centered at 23.10 eV. A time-delayed 805 nm laser pulse is used to probe the excited molecular states and neutral atomic fragments by ionization; the ejected photoelectrons from these states are spectrally resolved with a velocity map imaging spectrometer. Three excited neutral O* atom products are identified in the photoelectron spectrum as 4d(1)?(3)D(J)°, 4p(1) (5)P(J)° and 3d(1) (3)D(J)° fragments. Additionally, several features in the photoelectron spectrum are assigned to photoionization of the transiently populated superexcited states. Using principles of the ion core dissociation model, the atomic fragments measured are correlated with the molecular superexcited states from which they originate. The 4d(1) (3)D(J)° fragment is observed to be formed on a timescale of 65 ± 5 fs and is likely a photoproduct of the 4sσ(g) v = 1 state. The 4p(1) (5)P(J)° fragment is formed on a timescale of 427 ± 75 fs and correlated with the neutral predissociation of the 4sσ(g) v = 0 state. The timescales represent the sum of predissociation and autoionization decay rates for the respective superexcited state. The production of the 3d(1) (3)D(J)° fragment is not unambiguously resolved in time due to an overlapping decay of a v = 1 superexcited state photoelectron signal. The observed 65 fs timescale is in good agreement with previous experiments and theory on the predissociation lifetimes of the v = 1 ion state, suggesting that predissociation may dominate the decay dynamics from the v = 1 superexcited states. An unidentified molecular state is inferred by the detection of a long-lived depletion signal (reduction in autoionization) associated with the B (2)Σ(g)(-) ion state that persists up to time delays of 105 ps.  相似文献

The ionization energies (IEs) for the 1-methylallyl, 2-methylallyl, cyclopropylmethyl, and cyclobutyl radicals have been calculated by the wave function based ab initio CCSD(T)/CBS approach, which involves the approximation to the complete basis set (CBS) limit at the coupled cluster level with single and double excitations plus quasiperturbative triple excitation [CCSD(T)]. The zero-point vibrational energy correction, the core-valence electronic correction, and the scalar relativistic effect correction are included in these calculations. The present CCSD(T)/CBS results are then compared with the IEs determined in the photoelectron experiment by Schultz et al. [J. Am. Chem. Soc. 106, 7336 (1984)] The predicted IE value (7.881 eV) of 2-methylallyl radical is found to compare very favorably with the experimental value of 7.90+/-0.02 eV. Two ionization transitions for cis-1-methylallyl and trans-1-methylallyl radicals have been considered here. The comparison between the predicted IE values and the previous measurements shows that the photoelectron peak observed by Schultz et al. likely corresponds to the adiabatic ionization transition for the trans-1-methylallyl radical to form trans-1-methylallyl cation. Although a precise IE value for the cyclopropylmethyl radical has not been directly determined, the experimental value deduced indirectly using other known energetic data is found to be in good accord with the present CCSD(T)/CBS prediction. We expect that the Franck-Condon factor for ionization transition of c-C4H7-->bicyclobutonium is much less favorable than that for ionization transition of c-C4H7-->planar-C4H7+, and the observed IE in the previous photoelectron experiment is likely due to the ionization transition for c-C4H7-->planar-C4H7+. Based on our CCSD(T)/CBS prediction, the ionization transition of c-C4H7-->bicyclobutonium with an IE value around 6.92 eV should be taken as the adiabatic ionization transition for the cyclobutyl radical. The present study provides support for the conclusion that the CCSD(T)/CBS approach with high-level energetic corrections can be used to provide reliable IE predictions for C4 hydrocarbon radicals with an uncertainty of +/-22 meV. The CCSD(T)/CBS predictions to the heats of formation for the aforementioned radicals and cations are also presented.  相似文献

A hybrid of a time-of-flight mass spectrometer and a time-of-flight "magnetic-bottle type" photoelectron (PE) spectrometer is used for fs pump-probe investigations of the excited state dynamics of thiophene. A resonant two-photon ionization spectrum of the onset of the excited states has been recorded with a tunable UV laser of 190 fs pulse width. With the pump laser set to the first intense transition we find by UV probe ionization first a small time shift of the maxima in the PE spectrum and then a fast decay to a low constant intensity level. The fitted time constants are 80+/-10 fs, and 25+/-10 fs, respectively. Theoretical calculations show that upon geometry relaxation the electronic state order changes and conical intersections between excited states exist. We use the vertical state order S1, S2, S3 to define the terms S1, S2, and S3 for the characterization of the electron configuration of these states. On the basis of our theoretical result we discuss the electronic state order in the UV spectra and identify in the photoelectron spectrum the origin of the first cation excited state D1. The fast excited state dynamics agrees best with a vibrational dynamics in the photo-excited S1 (80+/-10 fs) and an ultrafast decay via a conical intersection, presumably a ring opening to the S3 state (25+/-10 fs). The subsequently observed weak constant signal is taken as an indication, that in the gas phase the ring-closure to S0 is slower than 50 ps. An ultrafast equilibrium between S1 and S2 before ring opening is not supported by our data.  相似文献
