Abstract: | The far-infrared spectra of poly(styrene sulfonic acid) (PSSA) ionomer films containing alkaline and alkaline earth ions have been studied, and strong, broad bands, whose frequencies are cation dependent, have been observed and assigned to cation motion. The force field elements for cations vibrating at sulfonate-containing sites have been obtained for different models of the cation-motion vibration. The effects of hydration, dehydration, and thermal annealing are discussed in light of ion clustering in these materials. |
