Abstract:To understand and quantify the fundamental behavior of nanometer- sized materials, it is necessary to measure their localized electronic structure, and to determine how the electronic properties depend on the size and shape of an individual nanoparticle. In particular, it is important to establish how the electronic structure evolves with cluster size, i.e., how do the electronic states change as the size evolves from the nanometer length scale to that of a macroscopic solid. Such an understanding will assist in the rational development of devices and catalysts that utilize the novel quantum - size properties of nanomaterials.
