Abstract:t has been revealed that Grobler-Balizs method and Ambrus method used for determination of dead time in gas chromatography are essentially identical. It has been proved theoretically that the dead time calculated from either method can be expressed as :(qtR.z- tR.z 1 )/(q-1 ).Where Z is the carbon number and q is the ratio of the adjusted retention times of sucessive members of the homologous series,tR is the retention time.The calculated results of experimental data reported in one refererce (Wronski B et al.J.Chromatogr,1986;364:53) showed that the limits of errors between these two methods ranged from- 2.05% to 0. 68%.The error is caused by different regression programs used in these two methods.Grobler-Balizs method needs two linear regression programs but Ambrus method needs only one.The latter is simpler.
