Abstract: | Summary The paper is based on the principle of maximal specific rate of dissipation work, which yields the theory of the plastic potential including the convexity of the yield surface. The author shows that in isotropic bodies the stress and the strain rate always have a common system of principal axes. He further demonstrates that, for soils with a sufficiently slender conical yield surface, the principal stress corresponding to a zero principal extension rate is always the intermediate one. It follows that a large class of yield surfaces are equivalent in plane flow.
