Abstract:The term “ion” has been introduced in science by M. Faraday in 1834 following a suggestion by W. Whewell who liked to use Greek words or word combinations to describe the new findings in several scientific areas. The Greek “ion” means moving and originates from the tribe of Ionians who were moving in ancient Greece from Thessaly to Peloponnese and to the Western coast of Asia Minor. The term “Ionics” has been eventually created by T. Takahashi in the 1960s to indicate the technological importance of ionic motion in solids in analogy to the term electronics.
