Abstract: | Strong colors: The solvation structure of copper(II) ions in water can be determined by optical absorption spectroscopy. Focus is placed on the absorption intensity (green: Cs(2) Cu(SO(4) )(2) ?6?H(2) O, black: CuSO(4) ?5?H(2) O, red: Cu(2+) in aqueous solution, and blue: Cu(2+) in glass). A dynamical model based on a Jahn-Teller-distorted complex describes the coordination of copper(II) ions in hydrate crystals and aqueous solution. |
