| Abstract: | The principle of image formation and the contribution of gas to the amplification of signals in an environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM) are described. The wide range of applications to the material and biological sciences is reviewed. Also presented are our studies on the process of gas/solid reactions, such as nucleation and growth of oxide whiskers/grains in the oxidation of iron, reduction of iron oxide, desulfication etc. with the first ESEM made in China. |
