Recording of weak light fluxes by electron counting with photomultipliers

The amplitude distributions for noise sources are discussed in relation to the counting of single quanta with photomultipliers. It is shown that the best Russian photomultipliers have a sensitivity at room temperature exceeding that of the human eye and can be used to measure fluxes of 30–300 quanta per second.
