Abstract:Whereas the concept of quality control and quality assurance is well understood by modern laboratories (either commercial or with national responsibilities) which are accredited in various analytical sectors, there is an enormous gap in the transfer of knowledge to smaller laboratories. A strong and urgent need has been highlighted for improving the measurement infrastructure in Europe, particularly in less favoured regions or countries. This article gives a summary of needs expressed in the course of five workshops funded by the Standards, Measurements and Testing Programme (European Commission) and held, respectively, in Greece, Ireland, Italy, Portugal and Spain.
