Interactions between water and polystyrene

Abstract:Water equilibrium in glassy polystyrene (Tg = 343 K) is described. Water content increases with increasing temperature and increasing water vapour pressure. The heats and entropies of mixing show that the polymer contains both free water and water sorbed on the chains, in small but approximately equal amounts; no noticeable clustering takes place.
