Abstract: | Chemisorption induced “magnetic dead layers” have been determined from Ferromagnetic Resonance (FMR) absorption of Ni and Fe thin films. Within experimental error “magnetic dead” or “live layers” can be excluded at free Ni surfaces. Approximately one hydrogen atom diminishes the contribution of one nickel atom to the thin film ferromagnetism in the β2-state. Twice the effect is found for CO adsorption on nickel. Possible models to explain chemisorption effects in surface magnetism are discussed briefly. |
