The formation of hydroxamic acids from ethyl hippurate and other amino acid and peptide esters has been investigated colorimetrically in relation to pH and hydroxylamine concentration. Conditions favorable for the reaction are pH 9,5 and a 0,72m hydroxylamine solution at 37°. Generally, the yield is slightly diminished by the competing saponification reaction. However, with esters of amino acids and dipeptides tending to undergo cyclization reactions, the yield is considerably reduced.
