Abstract:Vapor-phase infrared characteristic frequencies of ketones and aldehydes have been studied. The CO stretching vibrations in vapor phase have higher frequencies than those in condensed phase. The shifts are about 20 cm−1 for ketones and about 10 cm−1 for aldehydes. Both ketone and aldehyde have an absorption band at the range 1300–1100 cm−1, although their intensities are very different. This band was assigned to the CC stretching vibration of C(CO)unit.
