| Abstract: | For a field  of characteristic zero, and for each integer  , we construct a triangular derivation of ![$mathbf{k} [X_1,X_2,X_3,X_4]$](http://www.ams.org/proc/2001-129-03/S0002-9939-00-05558-1/gif-abstract0/img3.gif) whose ring of constants, though finitely generated over  , cannot be generated by fewer than  elements. |
