Abstract:Biodiesel was prepared via the transesterification of hempseed oil with methanol in the presence of NaOH as catalyst. Effects of molar ratio of methanol to oil, catalyst amount, reaction time and temperature on the transesterification were investigated. The conversion of methanol was determinated by chromotropic acid colorimrtry, and the products were analyzed by gel permeation chromatography, infrared speetroscopy and GC/MC. The experimental results show that both raising reaction temperature and increasing catalyst amounl were advantageous to the transesterification. The conversion of methanol increased to the maximum and then decreased with the elongation reaction time. With increasing the molar ratio of methanol to oil, the yield oi methyl esters increased, but the conversion of methanol decreased. Gel permeation chromatography analysis showed that it could convert hempseed oil to methyl esters completely by doing the transesterification twice.
