Abstract: | The structure of small palladium particles is investigated by HRTEM in order to know if structural variations, as a function of particles size, could explain some of the size effects encountered in heterogeneous catalysis. Small Pd particles are obtained by vacuum deposition on epitaxial MgO thin films. Imaging of the atomic planes down to a particle diameter of 1.8 nm shows that the particles are (100) (mainly) or (110) oriented on the substrate. Smallest particles (<2.5 nm) are perfectly fcc while some multiply-twinned particles are observed only for larger sizes. |
