| Abstract: | An asymmetric pinacol-type rearrangement was used in the synthesis of (S)-naproxen. The pinacol-type reaction of a  -aryl ketone which was oxidized with sodium hypochlorite in the presence of methanol to the methyl ester of naproxen. |
