Abstract: | Several techniques have recently been proposed to perform acoustic birefringence measurements, using off-axis SH-waves, in order to determine stresses in slightly anisotropic materials. These techniques tacitly assume that refraction effects, due to inhomogeneous stress distributions and/or local variations in material properties, are negligible. In this paper we investigate the conditions under which this assumption is valid. |
