Abstract:Two kinds of pitches used for carbon matrix precursor of C/C composites and their impregnating properties were analyzed by TG/DTG, NMR, SEM and OM, etc. The results show that, compared with the coal tar pitch from Wuhan Iron and Steel Plants and Taiyuan Iron and Steel Plants, the one from Taiyuan Iron and Steel Plant has more QI parts, higher viscosity, higher aromaticity, and the consequent higher impregnating temperature and higher carbon yield. Because of more QI parts in Taiyuan coal tar pitch, high carbonization pressure retard the growth and coalescence of mesophase, thus botryoidal structures are formed in the resultant coke which has lower graphitizability, whereas the coal tar pitch from Wuhan Iron and Steel Plant is not affected by the high carbonization pressure during the process of mesophase spherules coalescing and well ordered layer plane structures are developed in the resultant coke. Correspondingly, the consequent coke is easier to be graphitized.
