Abstract:The rencent progress on BN nanotubes is reviewed. Structure features and synthetic technology, (especially) chemical-synthesis routes and the corresponding growth mechanism, are summarized. BN nanotubes have a uniform electronic band gap of 5.5 eV, which is independent of tube diameter, chirality, or the number of tube walls. This property is different from that of carbon nanotubes. BN nanotubes can be used to fabricate some BN nanocomposites owing to their high chemical stability and thermal resistibility. BN nanotubes are promoted as a promising hydrogen storage material because of their highly porous structure and light mass density. Theoretical research as well as experimental work on lowering the cost, increasing the yield and purity of BN nanotubes and new application development are intensely pursued.
