Abstract:Atomic mercury is detected following the photolysis of HgBr2 at 193 nm. The photodissociation yield of Hg is estimated to be 0.01 ± 0.01. Formation of Hg in the disproportionation of HgBr is slow, proceeding with a rate constant < 5 × 10?16 cm3 molecule?1 s?1. Removal of Hg is dominated by inefficient heterogeneous processes.
