Preparation of amorphous carbon tetrachloride and characterization by neutron diffraction

A 5 g sample of carbon tetrachloride (CCl₄) deposited from the vapour on to a cadmium substrate at 5 K is shown to be amorphous by the absence of Bragg peaks in its neutron diffraction spectrum. Simple analysis shows that the range of correlations in amorphous CCl₄ extends only to next-nearest neighbours.
