Abstract: | The development of a self-sustained volume gas discharge is studied numerically. Special attention is paid to the formation and stability of the cathode sheath. It is shown that the high-voltage threshold for the ignition of a volume discharge is determined by the onset of cathode sheath instability. The methods for suppressing cathode sheath instability are discussed. |
