Abstract: | Polyethylene terephthalate and model compounds representing various aspects of polyethylene terephthalate have been treated with elemental fluorine. Polyester was found to react in a manner more resembling ethylene glycol dibenzoate than diethyl terephthalate or terephthalic acid. The degree of fluorine incorporation increases as the aliphatic character of the substrate is increased. The reaction was studied using fluorine incorporation, ir, ESCA and esr techniques. |
