Gradual phase transition of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylic acid) gel induced by electric current

Abstract:The copolymer gels showing gradual phase transition induced by temperature were synthesized by redox random copolymerization of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) and acrylic acid (AAc) monomer under a constant electric current. The behavior of gradual phase transition induced by temperature was examined by measuring the thermal properties, pKa values and swelling ratio. The experimental results indicate that temperature-induced gradual phase transitions of poly(NIPAAm-co-AAc) gel are mainly driven by transport before polymerization and protonation/ionization of the AAc, caused by the electric current.
