On the Herzfeld theory of metallization: Application

The Herzfeld criterion for metallic behavior and the conditions for its applicability are discussed briefly. It is emphasized that in applying this criterion to predict the onset of insulator-to-metal transitions resulting from the application of pressure, change in dopant or carrier concentration, etc., it is necessary to take into account not only the change in density but also the change of the pertinent electronic polarizability.
