Abstract: | Liquid and solid polymeric products were derived from a low-pressure glow discharge of ethylene. Polymerization pressure, discharge power, and monomer flow rate were systematically varied. Products were analyzed by infrared spectroscopy to determine the concentrations of characteristic functional groups in each. Polymer form, apparent crosslink density, and deposition rate were also reported. Structural variations and the form of the polymerization products can be explained in terms of the prevailing discharge conditions and the deposition rate, both of which are functions of the reactor operating parameters. It was found that the degree of crosslinking in rigid films of plasma polymerized ethylene is in the range of 6 to 16 chain carbons between crosslinks. |
