Abstract:In this review our interest is focused mainly on the recent developments of reseach on rare earth functional materials,especially on rare earth phosphors and hydrogen storage materials.A brief introduction of rare earth properties is given at first.Then rare earth phosphors including rare earth three colour phosphors,two colour phosphors,future potential phosphors activated by abnormal valence state rare earth ions and new long lasting phosphorescences found in 90's are summarized.Lastly we sum recent study progress in hydrogen storage materials and compare their properties.We propose that hydrogen storage alloys are still mainly hydrogen stroage materials at present due to low cost and maturing preparation technique.In addition we suggest some future aspects about rare earth function materials.
