Unsteady Turbulent Spiral Flows in a Circular Channel

Abstract:Turbulent spiral flows of water, developing in a rapidly rotating toroidal channel after abrupt braking, are investigated experimentally. The spiral flow structure is created by fixed-blade diverters located in the channel. The Reynolds number may be as high as 106. A simple model for describing the evolution of the longitudinal and azimuthal velocity components averaged over the channel section is proposed.
