Abstract:A novel method was developed to fabricate continuous glass fiber reinforced polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE/GF) composites which includes the use of conventional sintering and vacuum assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM), successively. The RTM resin (coded as M4506‐1) “fills” the porosity and defects of original PTFE/GF composites prepared by traditional sintering processing, improves the overall interface bonding between the matrix and fibers, and thus significantly improves the mechanical properties such as the flexural and interlaminar shear strength of fiber reinforced PTFE composites. The present work suggests a new way to produce fiber (especially continuous fiber) reinforced PTFE composites with high mechanical properties, and thus make it potentially possible to use PTFE‐based composites as structural materials.
