Preparation of low loss glasses for optical fibre communication systems

A technique is described for melting high purity glasses in which heat is generated within the glass by R.F. induction. Losses at c. 1060 nm were less than 50 dB Km^–1 Multimode fibres have been made from those materials with little increase in loss resulting from the fibre drawing process.
