Abstract:The technique of image tube diagnostics was one of main topics of the 18th ICHSPP which was held in 1988 in Xian. 25 papers on this subject were presented on the congress. In order to meet the requirements of the readers who are interested in the developments of image tube and intensifier cameras, we would like to introduce the advance in this field before publication of the proceedings of the 18th ICHSPP. The outstanding development on this congress was femtosecond streak camera. It was reported that the temporal resolution of less than 300fs had been achieved by the experiments and the theoretical time resolution of 50fs had been predicted with a newly designed femtosecond streak image tube. On this congress the discrete space charge effects and the compensators of femtosecond temporal dispersion were investigated theoretically by different authors. It can be concluded that the temporal resolution and dynamic range of femtosecond streak cameras both were limited by the space charge effects and that the temporal resolution could be improved by using a properly designed femtosecond time dispersion compensator. Another topic which had made some progress was picosecond framing cameras. The shortest exposure time of framing camera was 60ps and dynamic spatial resolution was 31p/mm. By using hybrid technique, four frames could be obtained. In addition to above topics, we have reported some other progress in this paper, such as synchroscan streak cameras, optical oscilloscopes, ranging technique by using circular streak image tube, x-ray streak camera and some other streak or framing image tube cameras with certain features.
