Abstract: | Summary The Vickers microhardness test has been used as an additional tool for the determination of the microstructure of an injection moulded semicrystalline thermoplastic. The results show for the first time that there is a clear and well defined correlation between microhardness measurements and changes in preferred orientation through the thickness of the mouldings as revealed by acid etching and wide angle X-ray diffraction. Notably, the microhardness test describes, if the necessary precautions are taken, the extent of the different structures and the degree of preferred chain axis orientation within those structures.
