Large scale synthesis of 4-ethylpyrimidine |

| Abstract: | The reaction of methyl propionyl acetate with formamidine acetate in the presence of sodium methoxide produces 6-ethyl-4(3H)-pyrimidinone (1) in 67% isolated yield. Reaction with phosphorus oxychloride and subsequent catalytic hydrogenolysis affords 4-ethylpyrimidine (3) in 41% overall yield. |
