Optical losses in ion-implanted waveguides

In this paper we first introduce complex refractive indices to describe the optical losses in the buffer layer of optical waveguides obtained by ion implantation. It is shown that the color-center absorption in the buffer layer can change significantly the mode-spacing function. We carried out a detailed analysis of the influence of the imaginary component of the buffer layer refractive index on the propagation characteristics.
