Borel functions and separability of metric spaces

Let X and Y be metric spaces with X separable, and let \(f: X\rightarrow Y\) be a Borel function. Is then f(X) separable? In this paper, we prove that this problem is independent of ZFC. We also give a partial answer to an open problem which was asked by A. H. Stone.
