Poly(β-pinenes) carrying one,two, or three functional end groups. I. The effect of reaction conditions on the polymerization of β-pinene

β-Pinene was polymerized with H₂O/BCl₃ (protic) and p-dicumyl chloride and sym-tricumyl chloride (nonprotic) inifer systems in CH₂Cl₂ or CH₂Cl₂/n-C₆H₁₄ solvents from ?10 to ?70°C. The effect of solvent polarity, temperature, and monomer and inifer concentration on conversions and molecular weights was investigated. Low conversions and molecular weights, M?_n = 1300–2500, obtained under these conditions suggest rapid termination.
