Abstract: | Aniline is easily N-methylated in supercritical methanol without catalyst at 350 degrees C and 0.237 g cm-3 to give mono-N-methylaniline with high selectivity, and the reaction rate is increased by a small amount of base (LiOH, NaOH, KOH, and CH3ONa), indicating a difference in the reaction mechanism from the ordinary acid-catalyzed one. |
