Abstract:Summary A study was conducted on erythrocytes in order to determine the composition and concentration of elements from patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery with and without type II diabetes. Samples were taken at various timeperiods and analyzed by means of proton induced X-ray emission (PIXE) analysis. Elements detected reliably were P, S, Cl, K, Ca, Fe, Cu, Zn, Br and Rb. In particular, elements worthy of note are S, Cl and Ca, which have strong implications in surgical procedures and aftercare.
