Abstract:The behaviour of Xundian, Fanshi and Zalainuoer lignites to nitric acid oxidation was studied by the structure analysis of oxidation products. The products were separated into two portions: water-soluble acid and acetone-soluble acid.The chemical composition and structure parameters of each portion were determined by ultimate and functional group analysis, average molecular weight, IR , ~1H-NMR and ~(13)C-NMR methods. The results show that similar molecular structure was found in the oxidation product of these lignites. That is: water-soluble acid can be represented by benzene-dicarboxylic acids with ethyl and other functional groups. Acetone-soluble acid is mixture of aromaticdicarboxylic acids with 2-3 condensed aromatic rings substituted by C_3-C_(10) alkyl and other functional groups. Probably, the two portions contain free aliphatic acids. It was found that the oxidation of lignites led to the degradation of aliphatic as well as aromatic fractions.The order of oxidation activity of three lignites is Xundian>Fanshi>Zalainuoer. It relates to the degree of aromatic condensation of the lignites.
