Epimerization of bicyclic vinyl tertiary-alcohols via [2,3] sigmatropic rearrangement

General methods for inverting the stereochemisty of vinyl $\text{tertiary}$-alcohols such as $\text{2}$ and $\text{5}$ into $\text{3}$ and $\text{8}$ respectively are described. The procedures employ a 2,3] sulfoxide rearrangement and will facilitate the extended use of the oxy-Cope rearrangement to a variety of related ring systems.
