A PERTURBATION ANALYSIS OF INITIAL POSTBUCKLING BEHAVIORS FOR AN ELASTIC CYLINDRICAL BODY OF A HARMONIC MATERIAL WITH RECTANGULAR CROSS SECTION UNDER LATERAL COMPRESSION

The finite plane-strain buckling problem for an elastic cylindrical body of a harmonic material with rectangular cross section under lateral compression is treated, em- phasis being laid on initial postbuckling behaviors. The nonlinear effects of small incremental deformations are taken into account up to the third order. By carrying out a perturbation procedure and using a complex variable method, a second-order perturbation solution for the nonlinear eigenvalue problem concerned is found out, which gives us not only a buckling condition and a buckling mode but also the initial postbuckling amplitude for each order of buckling.
