Banach space characterizations of unitaries: A survey

Abstract:	We survey Banach space characterizations of unitary elements of C^∗-algebras, JB^∗-triples, and JB-algebras. In the case of the existence of a pre-dual, appropriate specializations of these characterizations are also reviewed.
