Abstract:	$Trans$ -2,3- $bis$ -(3′-hydroxybenzyl)-butyrolactone (1) and 2,3- $bis$ -(3′-hydroxybenzyl)-butane-1,4-diol (2), recently identified in urine, have been synthesised in racemic form.
