Somea priori properties of unstable flows in the homogeneous model of the ocean

Summary In the context of the homogeneous model of the ocean some properties of linearly unstable flows are examined. The analysis leads to an eigenvalue confinement depending upon the vertical Ekman number and provides consequently necessary conditions for the instability in terms of the upper-surface stress.

Riassunto Sono esaminate alcune proprietà di correnti linearmente instabili nel contesto del modello omogeneo dell'oceano. I risultati ottenuti consistono in un confinamento degli autovalori che viene a dipendere, in particolare, dal numero di Ekman verticale e nella conseguente formulazione di condizioni necessarie per l'instabilità in funzione dello stress applicato allo strato superiore.
