An Innovative Multiple-layer Electro-optical Q-switch
Abstract:It is proposed a new type of Q-switch which is a multi-layer optical film of electron-optical materials. When an external electrical field is applied, the refractive index (thus the optical phase) of each layer is changed due to the electro-optical effect. This intracavity device can thus switch the Q value of the optical resonator. The major advantages of this Q-switch are ultra-low operation voltage and very thin in dimension. It can even attached to one end of the active medium to act simultaneously as one reflector of the optical resonator. Such a laser Q-switch can be very compact and stable in optical alignment, suitable for many industrial laser applications in which the use of a traditional laser Q-switch is not practical. It has also theoretically shown that the device has large voltage, temperature and angular tilting tolerances. In conclusion, it is a practical device.
